We are pleased to announce that we will be working on the restoration of the world-famous Eagle and Child pub in Oxford for the Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford (EIT). Planning permission and listed building consent have now been granted for this historically significant public house, a former haunt of the literary figures C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. The project is being led by Foster + Partners on behalf of the EIT and represents a once-in-a-lifetime revitalisation of this important heritage asset.

Our team is privileged to be collaborating with Foster + Partners, Ridge & Partners LLP, and Donald Insall Associates to deliver this landmark scheme for the benefit of the public, Ellison Scholars, staff, and fellows. The restored building will provide a new dining space, bakery, and outdoor garden, as well as collaborative meeting areas on the upper levels. It also forms an integral part of the wider EIT campus currently under construction in Littlemore, whose mission is to develop and deploy commercially sustainable technologies that address some of humanity’s greatest global challenges.

As Harriet Pillman, Associate at Donald Insall Associates, comments:

“This is a highly complex heritage site with multiple constraints that demand sensitive and carefully coordinated design. The project will create an inspiring environment for the Ellison Scholars while faithfully restoring the much-loved Eagle and Child pub and introducing a new café and restaurant for the enjoyment of Oxford’s residents and visitors for generations to come.”
